Roosevelt 2020 Grad Awarded Scholarship

Recently, Roosevelt 2020 graduate Sophia Linsky was awarded a $5000 scholarship from the Peninsula Optimist Club.

Many Qualified Applicants

In reviewing the applications, the selection committee had a difficult decision in selecting the winner as all the applicants were highly qualified. The committee was unanimous in its decision. The applications were evaluated in four areas:  grades, volunteerism, school activities, and any other activities with other organizations or work. In addition, applicants had to submit an essay on what their goals are and how the scholarship award would help achieve those goals.

Sophia has been accepted and is attending the University of Oregon’s Clark Honors College and Lundquist College of Business, and she’ll be working towards a bachelor’s in business administration with a concentration in entrepreneurship.  She said that the scholarship will be helpful because “there is additional tuition for students of the Clark Honors College, so any financial assistance in covering that extra cost will really help me to maximize my education and get the most out of my time at the University of Oregon.”

Academically, Sophia earned a weighted GPA of 4.089 ranking 9th in a class of 202 despite donating time for volunteer and school activities plus working a job.  She currently is an assistant at Two Rivers Bookstore and Weird Sisters Yarn in St. Johns.  She has also worked as a swim instructor at Columbia pool and worked as a Farmer’s Market intern through the St. Johns Center for Opportunity.

Her volunteer work includes 7 years as a summer reader volunteer and serving as a Teen Council member at the St. Johns Library. She has also helped with setup and cleanup of The St. Johns Bizarre for 8 years.

If all that was not enough, Sophia has been highly involved with the Roosevelt Theater Troupe serving as President and was a Thespian Letterman. In supporting the Troupe, she has worked 3 seasons at the Peninsula Optimists Christmas Tree Lot to earn money for Troupe activities.
